Centre of Economics

Head:  Ewa Okoñ-Horodyñska, Professor of Economics

The Department of Economics operates within the Institute of Economics and Management; five persons employed there (1 Professor and 4 Doctors of Philosophy) constitute the core of the academic staff while another 6 (2 Doctors of Philosophy, 1 MA and 3 doctoral students) permanently co-operate with the Department. The Department conducts research into the theory of economics with particular emphasis on institutional economics, theory and policy of innovation, technology transfer as well as protection of intellectual values, economics of development with deeper insight into innovative factors in the development of economy and social processes of anticipation of development directions (foresight), economic aspects of European integration, globalization and financial markets, social and economic situation of women in contemporary global world. The current research project is entitled Institutional determinants of discrimination in the process of globalization. The department has initiated publishing thematic Studia Ekonomiczne IEiZ (Economic Studies), the first of which, issued in August 2007, is entitled Man and Society in the Face of Globalisation, subsequent parts in preparation.

The Department of Economics is an organiser of conferences (2004, an international conference on Lisbon Strategy and possibilities of building economy based on knowledge in Poland, 2007 Knowledge and innovation in the development of economy: motive forces and barriers). The conferences have gained wide recognition (patronage of ZGPTE, Minister of Science and Higher Education, EU officer Prof. Danuta Huebner), they have attracted huge numbers of young economists and resulted in 4 publications, including one in English. The department has delivered independent expertise for the Senate and Prime Minister; it represents the university in international organisations, such as EAEPE, participates in activities for the region –developing regional innovation strategies, concepts for technology parks, clusters, expert work in the National Foresight Programme: Poland 2020
